II. Further Research
Giovanni Palatucci's story is told in Goffredo Raimo's "A Dachau, per Amore" (pictured below), "L'Alta Valle del Calore" by Francesco Scandone (summarized in research by Mary Palatucci Salerno also below), and "It Happened in Italy" by Elizabeth Bettina, who dedicates a chapter to him.
After World War II, the newly established Republic of Italy, and the Roman Catholic Church, were eager to celebrate the heroic actions of those who had opposed the German Nazi and Italian Fascist regimes. Over time, Giovanni's very real efforts were embroidered to claim unlikely thousands of beneficiaries; this led to a backlash and questioning that he had a role in saving so many lives.
As of this writing, Giovanni is listed as Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem, The World Holocaust Remembrance Center in Jerusalem.
