VII. Reminiscenses
"Beati noi" is Italian for "lucky us"; literally, "blessed us." In that spirit, we all have favorite family stories, some passed down from parents and grandparents and now dating back well over 100 years. If you have a story or reminiscence you'd like to share use Contact Us for instructions and help with doing so.

Our first entry below is from cousin Nick Gentile.
I remember so vividly my childhood visits to the Haskell residence of our grandparents. We spent many Saturday nights siting on the upstairs porch over the tavern. I remember a time when Uncle Frank, Uncle Ernie, Uncle Armand and Aunt Mary on the piano entertained us with what I guess you would call today a Jazz Concert though the music was contemporary 1930s. Also remember " Keeny" the Angora cat who only liked Grandma, Grandpa and Uncle Frank but was like a lion to the rest of the family. Also remember sitting at the dining room table on holidays for festive meals and listening to opera recordings on that classic Victrola which was located in the living room. Also an amusing memory from the mid 1930s when Evelyn and I were little squirts. In the winter on our Saturday visits we sat at the huge kitchen table and our seniors would consume coffee and all would consume various sweets. The Salernos were almost constant weekend visitors and on one occasion Evelyn and I were playing under the table and I was tormenting her. Grandma reached under with a wooden spoon and whacked me and Evelyn was saved and rejoiced. Later on in years I remember the family celebrating Christmas in our Lincoln Ave, home where 25 of us shared the table and Uncle George used to bring Italian Pastries from Brooklyn. Another memory, when I returned from army service Grandma had a special dinner for me when she made the promised Ravioli ( which she was expert on ) which she knew I loved and had promised me when I returned home. Also remember your parents"* wedding at which I was an usher. Two days before I got a butch haircut for which my mother almost destroyed me. These are just some random memories which may or may not be useful. Keep up your valued work. Our family is worth remembering. My best, Cousin, Nick
